SOCIAL, HEALTH, ECONOMIC AND POLITICAL SITUATION OF THE AREA.
The region has gone through a lot of challenges arising from political, economic, psychological and tribal hardships
We are operating in the post war recovery community where people of the area have suffered through the hands of many different rebel wars, tribal wars, raids from the karamojong nomadic pastoralist and natural calamities such as drought, famine, floods, locusts and diseases which has disorganized the political, social and economic development of the people in this area.
Majority of the people living in Pamba are slum dwellers, school dropouts and others who have never gone to school due to the high poverty level and a result many people are now being involved in doing unproductive activities such as robbery, prostitution and living in the streets as a way to earn their living.
Pamba slum area where the health facility is located now was the most affected area; it had the largest camp where people had settled until when the rebel activities ended. Some People returned back to their different villages while others remained living here because many of their parents and relatives were killed during the war by the rebels and that is why this health facility started operating as a mobile clinic to provide health services to the people living in the camp by then and late on it was constructed and up graded to a health facility level III by the Little Sisters of St. Francis Eastern Region.
The consequences of rebel activities still remain a challenge such as high illiteracy level, high level of poverty, unemployment, low level of education and robbery. The current problem of covid 19 pandemic has also worsened the situation. The people have become poorer and the cost of living has become too high and some people cannot afford to pay for the little subsidizes medical fee which our health facility mother Kevin health Centre a private not for profit charges them. The population is fast growing with the age group of 10 – 30 over 60% according to the population and housing census of 2014. It’s a mixture of social health and economic factors. Women and children are the most vulnerable groups which are affected directly or indirectly. Parents or guardian have the responsibility of looking after them on low income or with very little resources and in most cases, they end up in a bad nutritional status
The Little Sisters working in Mother Kevin Health facility are providing medical health services as well as counseling many victims of rape, early child marriages, related problems of HIV/Aids and many criminal cases of abortions
